On-Field Positives:

  • Smooth runner

  • Mobile pocket

  • Throws receivers open

  • Has a quick release

  • Short pass accuracy

  • Able to throw downfield

  • Could be successful at running the tush push play the Eagles run.

  • Leadership

Off-Field Positives:

  • Has been described as humble, hungry, process oriented.

  • Leads by example

  • Vocal leader

  • Very coachable, well receptive to criticism and instruction.

Physical Traits:

  • 6’1, 225lbs

  • Squats almost 500lbs.

  • Very mobile

  • Decent arm strength

Concerns:

  • He looks a little small. I question his ability to see the entire field.

  • Completion percentage for the season right now sits at about 65%, same as 2024. Not terrible but it isn’t great either. His week one completion percentage of 81% is keeping the total number afloat.

  • At home against the Wolverines, Mateer looked unbalanced. Overthrowing and underthrowing. Put the ball in harm's way. Had a bad interception where he completely missed his receiver.

  • Retreats backwards

  • Holds onto the ball too long.

  • While he does have enough arm strength to make deep throws, they are not often called. That leads me to believe throwing downfield is not a big strength of his.

  • Depends on RAC for larger yardage gains.

  • Consistency

NFL Prediction

I understand why some people are high on John Mateer. He has a flashy play style where he does a lot of running around, and Oklahoma has not gotten off to a start this well in a couple years. They are currently 6-1, so it looks like Mateer has gotten them back on track. When in reality, he has been very inconsistent. If I told you that Oklahoma beat Temple 42-3, you might assume Mateer played a flawless game. Actually no, he had 1 TD, 1 INT, and a completion percentage under 60%. I think he is too inconsistent to be a franchise QB, at least not early on in his career. He would need to go to a team that is already well established, where he would not have to save the franchise. He does not possess physical intangibles that are Josh Allen-esque, that would make me comfortable putting the franchise on his back through the early growing pains. I wish him luck but I think there are clear limitations.
