On-Field Positives:

  • He looks most comfortable in 3 step drop backs and play action.

  • Slides.

  • Can move the pocket.

  • He can get the ball out quickly.

  • Leadership.

  • Can throw on the move.

  • Has some success during play breakdowns where he has to do something off script.

  • He makes really good intermediate throws up the side lines.

  • He slides when scrambling.

  • Does not get hung up on bad throws or INT’s

Physical Traits:

  • 6’2, 208lbs.

  • Short and intermediate arm strength.

  • Mobility.

  • Velocity.

  • Arm Accuracy.

Concerns:

  • Has only started one season so far as a redshirt junior.

  • He is accurate, but the ball placement is not always there.

  • The QB position at Alabama does not come with a realistic NFL experience.

  • Retreats backwards.

  • His footwork is not as fluid as it should be, the way he moves suggests he is playing nervous. It's most noticeable against Georgia.

  • Against Georgia, Alabama’s line was completely disorganized on a 4th and 1. It was a QB run with a fake handoff element that just looked clunky. It was noticeable from the snap it was going to fail. Failing to audible out of that play and recognize the defense’s plan is what calls for concern.

NFL Prediction:

In my opinion it boils down to one thing for Simpson, and that is reps. I would have a lot less concerns and he would be a more refined player. It is also hard to judge the Alabama QBs because there is high quality offensive talent everywhere on that roster. There is a case to be made that Simpson is throwing to the most talented receiver in college football not named Jeremiah Smith or Carnell Tate.

I think he should stay another year. I know his season stats look great as of right now, but every QB at Alabama has good stats. If Simpson does decide to go to the NFL after only 1 year of starting in college. He cannot go to a team that needs a starting franchise QB right away, that has disaster written all over it. He would need a Jordan Love approach where he sits for 2-3 years and then takes over. Even if he stays he will still have only 2 full seasons of being the starting QB. I would think twice before picking him if I was drafting for a team that needs a franchise QB ASAP.
